Neurovidenskab

Fra slutningen af 1800-tallet og et godt stykke ind til 1900-tallet var det den generelle holdning, at centralnervesystemet, når det var færdigudviklet hos voksne, ikke havde nogen mulighed for at regenerere i tilfælde af fx en hjerneskade. I dag tænker man anderledes om hjernens potentiale.

 

Inden for Neuroscience er Neural plasticitet et centralt begreb. Begrebet Neural Plasticitet er den antagelse, at både hjernens struktur og funktion blandt andet er et produkt af vore oplevelser livet igennem. Grundantagelsen er at Hjernen kan regenerere efter en skade og aktive bevægelser kan føre til plastiske ændringer.

Med denne antagelse åbnes nye muligheder for behandling af hjerneskader og andre sygdomme.

Indenfor Neuroscience antager man, at hjernen virker funktionelt. At hjernen fungerer funktionelt vil sige, at den fungerer som et omfattende neuralt netværk mellem de forskellige områder, som hjernen består af. Og blandt andet derfor er der mange muligheder for at indlære tabte funktioner ad nye ”veje”.

Merzenich is professor emeritus of neuroscience at the University of California, San Francisco.

Norman Doidge, MD, Author of the Brain That Changed Itself; Faculty University of Toronto Department, and Research Faculty, Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

“..One of the foremost researchers of neuroplasticity, Michael Merzenich’s work has shown that the brain retains its ability to alter itself well into adulthood — suggesting that brains with injuries or disease might be able to recover function, even later in life. He has also explored the way the senses are mapped in regions of the brain and the way sensations teach the brain to recognize new patterns.
